Welcome Bloggers!
This week we learn from successful young Aboriginal people how they reach their goals, stay fit and cope in times of trouble. Our resource is a fantastic magazine about Aboriginal issues, called Vibe Australia, which you can reach by Googling, or go to http://www.vibe.com.au and explore the section called Vibe Health - Celebrity Health.
Once you’ve read some ideas from the website, read the extracts by Daniel Geale, famous boxer, and Kylie Farmer - the first Aboriginal actress to play Juliet in Romeo and Juliet.
Once you’ve read these resources, let us know what strategies these young people use to stay on track. Then tell us what YOU think works to lead a strong and successful life!

Good Day Everyone!
We went to the Vibe Australia website at http://www.vibe.com.au and read the celebrity comments in the Vibe Health section. We took notes then chose the decision that we thought was MOST important that they had made for a healthy life.
Jack chose Joe Williams - He says he doesn’t smoke or drink - it’s just better for him and his family.
Koby chose Dean Widders who has made the same decision.
Makayla chose Joe Williams - He says he doesn’t want to be sitting in front of TV every day - he is active instead.
Kaitlyn chose Sharnee Fenwick - She tries to follow a healthy diet.
We think it’s a good idea to go for it! Don’t sit around waiting!

Je bidwillcampusbloggers,
Vibe is a “deadly” magazine! I try not to miss it. There are always interesting articles and people to read about. I especially love to read about our role models, they always have such great rules about how to live a good and healthy life. We can all learn from them no matter how old we are.
Keep up the great work Bidwill!

Hi rappers,
This is 6B English with our rap response for Rap Point 2. We read the articles about Daniel Geale and Kylie Farmer. We liked Daniel’s three factors for success:
* Listen to your trainers
* Have a plan
* Have a go.
Emily remembers (not) listening to her swimming trainer. She was told not to look behind her to see where her competitors were, but she did - and they overtook her! Jesse remembers making a plan for his writing task in the recent NAP tests. Even if you don’t finish, the teachers and markers can see where your story was going to go. Jerome says that, at rugby training, his coach helps the players make a plan for passing, to know when to get the ball out to the wings. They give each move a code word.
We think that Daniel Geale should just “go for the golden glove!”
When we read the health interviews with the Aboriginal sportspeople and actors, we noticed that they all ate healthily. We agree that, even when we grow up, we need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, try to cut out the junk food, and not to drink too much or to smoke.
Dylan warned us about getting a sugar rush at lunchtime, when some students “go psycho” from too much sugar or red food colouring. These students often end up in trouble. They should go to the oval - and run! Jamie thinks that canteens should only sell healthy food. Sean remembers about going to the doctor to make sure a little problem doesn’t become a bigger problem later.
6B English students are proud of their achievements, such as:
* fixing an aunt’s computer and finding her missing games files
* trying to beat Dad’s girlfriend’s son’s record of 90 minutes in the City to Surf
* saving a dying pet goldfish with a ladle
* learning yoga from an aunty
* training with Dad at Jamison Park
* doing track and field at Little Athletics every Friday.
Surprisingly, three quarters of our class go to a gym regularly!

Hello rappers!
5E was reading the interviews with Luke Carroll and Joe Williams.
Mayesha agrees we must exercise every day to keep fit. Homa says to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. They have vitamins and minerals our body needs. Taela’s Dad warned her that weightlifting is not for little kids - you must be over 16. Cherisse likes doing laps of the pool and running along the beach. Yating knows that drinking, taking drugs and smoking are bad for your body. It can make it harder to breathe, and that is very difficult if you are a champion rugby league player or actor.
Aimie liked Joe’s advice about not sitting around all day and watching TV. Anousha said that running around the park every morning was good for your health, and we power walk at school three days a week, and record the results on our Premier’s Sporting Challenge charts.
“Healthy food = healthy life”
“Say NO to smoking”
“If you have a healthy body, you’ll have a good life.”
“If you have a healthy body, you’ll probably have a LONGER life.”

Good day 6B English at Penrith PS,
Love your work! Emily, we all learn heaps from things that happen to us! Jesse, all the best - hope your NAPLAN plan worked out for you. Jerome - good on you for training hard at rugby. Dylan - I’m with you - more running, less sugar is best! Jamie, I wish school canteens would just sell healthy food - especially stop selling sugary drinks. Thanks so much for sharing your successes with technology, sport and pet rescues, and I am really impressed that so many of you go to the gym - we need more Australians like you!
Good on you!

Greetings, 5E at Penrith PS,
Great work! I am so impressed that you are doing the Premier’s Health Challenge three times a week. We know that many Australian kids are becoming unfit but with students like Mayesha, Cherisse, Aimie and Anousha we are going to build a healthier country! Taela’s dad is right - weightlifting is for 16+. Homa - You are so right about healthy food - in fact, some people have a saying: “We are what we eat.” Yating, drinking and smoking are bad for our bodies - as you say, it’s hard to be a champion if we are not in top condition.
Thanks so much for your great health messages!

Hello rappers!
This is 6W English with our Rap Response to Rap Point 2.
Some of us read and compared the interviews with Joe Williams and Aaron Fa’aoso. They both talked about positives and negatives to do with health. Joe doesn’t drink or smoke, and always discourages others from drinking and smoking. He says that junk food should not be eaten regularly. Aaron has white meat for protein in his diet. He talked about traditional Torres Strait Islander foods and how flour, sugar and tea have increased diabetes for his mob. (Note: There is a mistake on the Vibe website; actor Aaron’s interview also appears under touch footy star Bo De La Cruz’s name.)
Some of us read and compared the interviews with Dean Widders and Sharnee Fenwick. Both want to stay fit and follow a strict diet during the week so they can be fit and full of energy to play football (Dean) and music (Sharnee) on weekends.
Some of us read and compared the interviews with Daniel Geale and Joe Williams. Both choose not to smoke and Joe also chooses not to drink. Daniel only ever has a few drinks. Daniel and Joe both try to eat lots of fruit, vegetables and only lean meat.
Things we do that can be negative influences on our health:
* Play too much Pokemon on Play Station Portable (PSP) or Nintendo DS.
* Stay too long on the computer.
* Sleep all weekend.
* Eat too many lollies and chocolates.
Things we do that are positive influences on our health:
* Eat chocolate only once a week.
* Try not to eat fatty foods or junk food.
* Get lots of sleep.
* Ride bikes, skateboards or treadmills. Or walking! Or football.
* Volunteer to help Mum or Dad with shopping and cooking so we can ask for favourite vegetables to be included.
* A Wii is more physically active than X-Box or Play Station.

Good day 6W English at Penrith PS,
I really like the way you compared interviews - that’s a great way to sample some key ideas! There seems to be a consensus among these young Aboriginal celebrities that having a healthy diet and exercising is the way to go - with some also opting out of drinking and smoking. Thanks for pointing out the mistake in the Bo De La Cruz entry - I will email Vibe and let them know this needs to be fixed!
Thanks for your input about negative and positive influences on lifestyle - it seems important to have a balance between “sitting down” fun and active fun.
Love your work!

Hello rappers!
Here is 5P’s Rap Response to Rap Point 2. We read the interviews with Aaron Fa’aoso the actor, Lucas Proudfoot the surfer, and Edgar Wymarra the boxer. We guessed correctly that Aaron was a Torres Strait Islander! After reading their positive thoughts about keeping healthy, we ended up having a big discussion about depression.
Sometimes people start to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and eat junk food because they get depressed. Nicorette gum only helps people who already smoke. How can a depressed person get strong again, and try not to get addicted to cigarettes, alcohol and junk food?
* Go bowling!
* Talk to someone: your parents or a friend. (But choose the friends wisely.)
* Keep good company with sensible people.
* Ring up all your cousins and have a football or soccer game in the park.
* Take care of yourself.
* Have fun!
Best wishes from 5P @ Penrith PS

Good afternoon rappers,
Mrs Nuttall’s Year 5 group discussed the health interviews of Joe Williams and Daniel Geale.
We learned that we should eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Always go to the doctor straight away when you get hurt. Don’t drink or smoke or you’ll mess up your career. Don’t eat a lot of junk food. Exercise every day.
We talked about ways to stay healthy, such as not putting too many toxins in our bodies. Drink plenty of fresh water for good health. If little kids want to eat at Macca’s, take them - but only buy them a “fruit bag” of apple slices, or fruit juice, or salad, or a bowl of breakfast cereal with milk.
Robbie reminded us to “Keep your belly warm!”

Good day, 5P rappers from Penrith PS - Love your work!
I’m glad you were able to look at the ideas of Aaron Fa’aoso, Lucas Proudfoot and Edgar Wymarra - good on you for guessing Aaron is a Torres Strait Islander! I think it is really good to get practical about ways to avoid depression and to stay strong in our lives. We all have tough things happen to us and your ideas will really work to keep you strong. It seems to be so important to reach out, to stay active and to stay connected - even though it can feel easier to get very quiet and shut down a bit. I am going to share your ideas at my school - thank you!

Greetings to Mrs Nuttall’s Year 5 group -
Thanks for your thoughts about a healthy lifestyle! You listed those magic ingredients which really help to build us all up - a healthy diet, lots of exercise, avoiding junk food, plenty of water and some healthy snacks from Macca’s if we do go there. If we all follow these ideas, we are going to be so fit and well - it’s very inspiring.
Robbie - thanks for your advice about the warm belly!!

Hi Rappers!
After reading about the celebrities in Vibe, our class has decided that these are the most important factors for success:
* Keep trying
* Always take the positive path
* Believe in yourself
* Don’t let the little things bring you down.
Jonathon really liked reading about Joe Williams because he is a good football player and he is being a good example for kids all around Australia. Luke thought the most important message came from Edgar Wymarra because he said not to smoke or drink alcohol because if you want to be a top sports star, you need to make positive choices. We discussed making positive choices in life like Aaron Fa’aoso. This was also talked about in our Life Education lessons.
We believe that the three most important factors in Daniel Geale’s boxing success are that he:
* Never gives up
* Always does his best
* Trains and works hard
Joel really liked how Daniel never gave up and just boxed his way to success. We were really impressed with his ‘never say die’ attitude and boxing record!
Kylie Farmer has learned five traditional skills because she believes that being Aboriginal is an integral part of who she is, her identity. She wants to pass on her knowledge to the next generation.
Emma liked reading about Kylie because she was able to take on such a demanding role, even though it wasn’t something others would expect her to do. She also loves how Kylie cares about the next generation of Aboriginal people. Karissa thinks it is fantastic that they have finally chosen an Aboriginal woman to play Juliet.
Have a fantastic week, fellow rappers!

Hello,
This week we have read the articles from Vibe on the Internet and from the magazine. We believe that knowing who you are and where you come from should give you a great sense of pride in your culture. Staying healthy and fit should be a main priority in everybody’s life. To do this you need to eat vegetables, fruit, wheat products, dairy and meat. Make sure you are not eating too much fat and sugars. You also need to stay active by playing sports and exercising daily.
Kylie and Daniel’s stories are great inspiration because they never turn their backs on life or their culture. They always keep trying and they never give up. Kylie and Daniel lead by example they are great inspiration to all indigenous children and they gave us a great idea of how to live life. They always kept pushing until they reach their goal.

Hello everybody,
We read Daniel Geale and Kylie Farmer’s stories. We think that Daniel is a very good boxer he began boxing at the age of nine years old. He believes in himself and he has confidence in his ability. This is an important lesson we can all learn, confidence will help all of us achieve things in life. His motto is “never give up and keep trying no matter what”.
Kylie Farmer is a famous actor, she plays many roles such as Juliet in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. She believes in her culture and her identity. She tries to help other’s learn about their identity. Her Aboriginality plays an important role in her life. She can make fire, hunt, gather traditional medicines and she can make tools.
Amy also found out that her country is Badtjala.
Talk to you next week

Good day, Glenhaven 5/6P - love your work!
I think the four factors for success which you have chosen are excellent - if we all lived like this, our lives would be fantastic! It’s amazing how many people give up, choose a negative path, don’t believe in themselves or let the little things bring them down. You’ve really voted for staying positive and focused - I’m wondering if some of you are good at sport because these ideas really fit with people who are successful at sport.
Thanks Jonathon, Luke, Joel, Emma and Karissa for your great ideas. Jonathon - I agree that Joe Williams is a great role model. Luke - positive choices do make a difference - it takes guts to be different from other people, but it can really pay off. Joel, I hope that Daniel Geale really makes it right to the top in boxing. Emma, I agree with you that Kylie is wonderful because she cares about the next generation. Karissa, it’s so cool that Australia has had an Aboriginal Juliet, isn’t it?
Thanks for all your ideas!

Good day, Richmond HS Rappers - Great to hear from you!
Year 7 RHS - Amy you have found out that your country is Badjtala, good on you. Could you tell me where your people are from? It’s pretty amazing that Daniel Geale has been boxing since he was nine, isn’t it? I agree with you that confidence seems to be a big key in forming our identity. Two people can have exactly the same skills but the one who is self-confident will get out there and have a go, while the one who has no confidence will never trust how good they are! It’s impressive that a young Aboriginal actor like Kylie Farmer has learned to make tools and gather traditional medicine, isn’t it?
Year 8 RHS - I love your health priorities, thank you. I also agree that it is very important to know where we come from and have pride in our culture, that’s what we build on to forge a strong identity. Daniel and Kylie are inspirational because they keep on going towards their goals. As you say, they never turn their back on life or on their culture!
Thanks for your great ideas.

Hi rappers,
This is SCHC at Penrith PS with our post for Rap Point 2. We read the interview with Dean Widders. Robbie wanted us to read about him because Robbie is a big Rabbitohs supporter.
We remembered that Dean likes to:
* exercise (and have a warm belly)
* eat lots of fruit
* practise playing football
* go to training every week
* eat vegetables and keep fit at the gym
* remember to relax in front of TV sometimes
* eat good food and keep up his fitness, maybe running around the oval.
In our group:
Jake eats lots of fruit and vegetables.
Josiah eats ALL his vegetables.
Chris runs around the park.
Robbie drinks lots of water.
Mrs Coote tries not to eat too much chocolate.
Miss K never has sugary drinks.
Frank rides his bicycle round the outside of his house.
Blake stretches his leg muscles before exercise.
A final message from Robbie: “Stay healthy in your life.”
Best wishes from SCHC @ Penrith PS

Good day, SCHC at Penrith PS - Love your work!
Go the Rabbitohs, Robbie! Thanks for your information about Dean Widders - he really puts in the effort needed to be an excellent athlete, doesn’t he? I really like it that he eats well, stays fit AND remembers to relax sometimes. Jake and Josiah - you’ve inspired me to eat more fruit and vegies - sometimes I forget how good they are for us. Robbie - I’m going to focus on drinking a lot of water. I’ve read that water is very good for firing up our brains for thinking. Chris, Frank and Blake - good on you for getting out there and exercising. I’ve read that exercise is very good for keeping the blues away as well as for fitness. Miss K and Mrs Coote - I salute you for your healthy habits too!
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

G’day from Crawford Rappers,
We are a little late in posting our blog because our school has been very busy. We are a very sporty school and classes participate in a number of sporting competitions and weekly PSSA games.
Two of our students Tori and Joshua have been representing our school at the Sydney West Cross Country and both did us proud. When we were talking about goals and succeeding this week and looking at how Daniel Geale succeeded in boxing Tori said her goal this year is to make the Sydney West Cross country and to finish in the top half of the students. She came 28th even better than she thought she would.
Just this week David and Tyson were part of the football team that won the Blacktown Royce Simmons District shield and will now go onto the regional final.
Here is our advice for staying fit;
• Don’t laze around on the couch all day - get up and do some exercise.
• Eat well
• Have a go at a number of different sports and activities until you find one that suits you.
Best wishes from 5B at Crawford Public School

Congratulations to Tori and Joshua for representing your school at Sydney West Cross Country - that’s great! David and Tyson - good on you for being part of the team that won the Royce Simmons District Shield - all the best when you get to the regional final.
Thanks for your ideas - I think you are so right when you say that people need to find the sport or activity which really SUITS them.
All the best with your sporting endeavours!

Hey rappers, 5/6S here!
As a class we have all been looking at Vibe magazine and have been taking down some notes for Rap Point 2 and from our own knowledge.
We found it really interesting about how some famous people such as Sharnee Fenwick (singer), Nathan Djerrkura (AFL player), Edgar Wymarra (Boxer), Joe Williams (Rugby League player) and Luke Carroll (actor) have such good replies on, “What are the most convincing strategies for succeeding, staying fit and for getting through times of trouble?” Here are some of the things they said that we thought were very useful:
Healthy diet:
• Try and avoid some of your weaknesses food wise (lollies, chocolate, etc).
• Eat more fruits and vegetables each day.
• Don’t eat too much junk, it WILL bring you down!
• If you stick to a healthy diet you will be in good condition for things such as sports, exams etc.
Views on drinks drugs and smoking:
• Don’t drink or smoke if you want to be the BEST you can.
• It’s better for you and your family if you don’t smoke.
• It ISN’T healthy!
Fitness:
• Try to exercise EVERY DAY!
• Daily sport training is very effective.
• Go for walks.
What to do when you’re down:
• Talk to a friend.
• Go for a walk alone or with someone close to you.
• Talk to your parents because they have the answer to everything!
• Spend some time with someone you love (friend, a pet, family).
How to be successful!:
• You need to know who you are.
• Follow your dreams.
• There is always a blessing in disguise.
• There is always room for improvement.
• Never give up, keep trying no matter what!
For our fitness we try to do at least 30 minutes of sport a day, and record it in our Premier’s Sporting Challenge booklet.
That is all we have for Rap Point 2. Hope you enjoy and we hope some of our advice is useful to you!
Bye for now, 5/6S rappers

Wow - you have done so much work looking at Sharnee Fenwick, Nathan Djerrkura, Edgar Wymarra, Joe Williams and Luke Carroll. I can see that you have had some excellent discussions about ways to succeed and stay fit. Thanks so much for summarising your thoughts - I really agree with the points you make about diet, smoking and exercise.
Your ideas for what to do when we are feeling down are very good - it is so important to REACH out and not go through troubles completely on our own. In your tips for how to be successful, I especially liked “You need to know who you are” and “There is always a blessing in disguise.”

You sure do sound like a sporty school! Congratulations to Tori and Joshua for your cross country efforts. Great goal setting Tori. My mum has a favourite saying, ” if you don’t have a go, you will never know how great you might have been”. I always remember that when I am scared about trying something new or challenging.
Congratulations also go to David and Tyson, and good luck with the regional final. You have all given some excellent advice for keeping fit. I am trying to keep fit too. On weekendsI ride my bicycle around Lake Illawarra near Wollongong. I usually ride about 10 kilometres, and the scenery is beautiful.
Keep up the great work Crawford.

Hi Identity bloggers,
We’ve been joined by Lilly and Sarah, who are going to give the response to this Rap Point.
We think the most convincing ways to succeed, stay fit and get through times of trouble are to
*not smoke or drink and have a healthy diet of fruit and veges.
*exercise regularly
*always be positive and think of good things that have happened to you.
and when things go bad, you need to look to your family and friends for support.
We think that the 3 things that helped Daniel Geale succeed as a boxer were that he always tries to eat well, he doesn’t drink or smoke and he exercises a lot and regularly.
These are important strategies even for the other celebrities. Most jobs need us to be fit and healthy to be able to do our best and succeed.
bye from Lilly and Sarah at Wollumbin.

Good Day Lily and Sarah at Wollumbin!
You are so right - exercise, diet and thinking positively seem to be very important in succeeding and getting through hard times too! There is a great website called gratefulness.org which lists many things we can be grateful for - because gratitude seems to be a great way to keep the blues away.
Daniel Geale is a great role model and I really admire all young people who do not drink or smoke. As you say, most jobs need us to be fit in order to succeed.
Thanks Lilly and Sarah!

We in 7r3 have just completed our school athletics carrnival and many of our class mates did very well. Our Dubbo College also won the ASTLEY CUP over Bathurst and Orange High Schools last week which is a sporting competition that has been going for over 80 years. 11 of our class play sport on the weekends and 6 play sport during the week at night.
After reading about the sports people in class the following comments were made by students:
* Rebecca chose Luke Carroll - ‘Acting is very demanding’
* Lyndon chose Bo - ‘Tries to stay off the the grog’
* Maddie chose Dean - ‘He doesn’t like drinking or smoking and wouldn’t be here today if he did’
* Jacob chose Daniel - ‘He tries to get the most out of life’
* Euta chose Daniel - ‘He thinks its going to be hard but he goes in anyway and tries.’
The class appreciates hard work and there is a lot of very healthy and active students in this class. Many have older siblings and relatatives that inspire and encourage them to do well. Everyone is looking forward to State of Origin tonight.

After reading the information, 7R1 discovered that the people featured had the following attitudes to Health:
* doesn’t really like alcohol anyway
* doesn’t eat Macca’s very often
* tries to keep off the junk food
* You should get the most out of life
We also found that, to improve their lifestyle and mental health, they did some of the following things:
* goes for long walks if feeling down, or writes a song, or talks to friends
* spending time with his son helps forget his problems.
We feel that these are good values to follow to have a healthy life.

Hi from Biraban 5/6P
Deadly Vibe is always popular in our library so it was good to use the web site.
We decided that these are the most important factors for success to:
* never give up
* to keep trying no matter what
* to keep a strong cultural identity and family.
After reading about Daniel Geale we believe you should really love what you decide to do. We also think you should train really hard at what you are doing and necer give up even if it get’s tough.
Kylie Farmer has taught us the importance of knowing your identity and your culture and the importance of family. Just like Daniel, she has had faith in her pathway.
