Welcome rappers!!
We build our identity as we travel through life. Identity involves where we come from, mentors who support us, our own strengths and the lessons we learn along the way. So, our identity comes from our family and also from what we MAKE of our lives.
This week we look at HOW we build a good future for ourselves. This involves having dreams for our future and then making them happen – step by step. These steps are called goals – all the steps we make towards a great future are definitely worth all the effort and persistence!
As well as dreams for their own personal lives, it is fantastic when young people have dreams for a 21st Century world. I really look forward to reading your wishes for the world!

Good Day Everyone!
This week we looked at what we want our families to be like when we have our own children.
Mikayla wants to have two children because she knows she will be a great mum. She will treat them the way she has been treated herself – showing respect and showing them the right way to live. Claudia wants five children because she comes from a big family herself and she thinks people learn to share and take care of each other. Love is the most important thing – sharing it around. Tamara said being responsible as a mum is really important – it is not a job we can walk away from. The whole group thinks that having your own family is one way to do the very best things from our own childhood plus add our own different ingredients too.
Our wish list for the 21st Century:
Peace and harmony
Global warming to end
The bad guys to be gone forever.
See you!

Hello everyone,
Class SCHC at Penrith PS read “Strong identity – proud future” and then talked about our own futures. Right now, some of us are good at: football; 3D maths; soccer (two of us); watercolour painting; basketball; drums; and making warm winter soups.
In the future we would like to be: a V8 Supercar driver; a professional soccer player; an artist in a gallery; a professional basketballer; or a Gladiator on TV. One of us would like to learn to drive a car. Mrs Coote just wants to travel the world! Robbie is away today, but we know he wants to play football for the Rabbitohs.
To get there, we will need to practise, practise, practise. We will need to train hard every night, learn to box, get bigger muscles, work hard at school, and save lots of money.
Our role models and mentors include: Frank’s uncle, who is a good driver; Chris’s dad – but it’s his mum who knows the rules of soccer; Miss K’s friend, who is a great artist; Jake’s basketball coach named Ian; Josiah’s favourite Gladiator, called “Scar”; Blake’s mum and dad; Robbie’s favourite team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs; and Mrs Coote’s brother, sister-in-law and Nan, who are all experienced world travellers.
We have taken the Rap Sheet about our wishes for the world of tomorrow to our classroom for the next Circle Time.

Dear rappers,
6B English split into three groups to tackle this Rap Point.
One group discussed families. One student wanted one child in his future family, so it won’t cost as much money. Four wanted two children each because it’s lonely being an only child sometimes. Two wanted three children because the brothers and sisters can help to look after each other. One of us comes from a big family and would prefer to be an uncle to his nieces and nephews.
We would build a sense of family through family meetings, and spending time with each other, such as going to see new things. To get through tough times we will talk about the problems, keep the children fed and encourage them to forget bad times. “Keep safe!”, “Believe in yourself!”, “Eat breakfast!”, “Don’t give up!” “Stay positive” and “May the force be with you.”
Another group discussed our future work identities. Currently, we are good at: art, puzzles, rugby league, soccer, electronics, maths problems, baking cookies and hip hop dancing. When we grow up, we would like to be: a sketch artist; a pilot; a professional rugby or soccer player; a veterinarian; a personal trainer; or a high school teacher. To do these careers, we must: be successful; make lots of money; love animals; keep fit and healthy; and have admirable qualities.
To achieve our goals we will need: good grades at school and TAFE (x 2); pass tests; keep fit; keep practising; study hard (x 3); and keep learning. Our mentors include: artistic friend Natasha; Mum, who’s in the Air Force; football coach Wade; Cousin Alex the sportsman; Uncle Andrew the IT guy; Dad, who’s very smart; a fit person; and Aunty Judy the teacher.
For the future people of the world, our third group wished for:
• world peace
• a greener world
• not as many criminals
• everyone to stop smoking and drinking
• better education opportunities for kids and adults
• reduced gas emissions.
It would also be great if Australia could attract more tourists.
Best wishes from 6B English at Penrith PS

G’day rappers,
5E at Penrith PS discussed our hopes and dreams for future careers. Some of us are already good at: hip hop dancing; decimals in mathematics; discus; cross country running; landscape drawing; krump (free form dancing); rugby league; cartoon drawing; belly dancing; family soccer games; and all types of maths.
When we grow up we would like to be:
* famous!
* a professional Newcombe ball player
* an Olympic athlete
* a chef in a big restaurant
* an artist (two of us)
* a slash dancer
* a professional rugby league player
* a doctor (two of us).
We will do this because we want to: be rich (”… or die trying!”); win gold medals; use our knowledge; “prove to the world I can do it”; cool; admired; follow family traditions. To get there, we will need: lots of practice (x 3); move to Paris; follow Dad’s lost Olympic dreams; to prove ourselves to family; like what we are doing; believe in yourself; and keep on going.
Someone who could mentor me might be: Hannah Montana; myself (until I find a Newcombe ball coach); my dad the champion; “my Mum whose plans were changed after I was born”; an artistic aunt; my brother, Brian, the dancer; Sonny-Bill Williams or Hazem El Masri; an artistic Nan; my cousin the teacher; and some uncles who are already doctors.
Thanks for reading our rap response.

Hello everyone,
6W English at Penrith PS split into groups to cover the different aspects of this rap point.
Some of us are already good at: walking; playing PlayStation, singing hip hop, playing rugby league, playing netball and going deep sea fishing.
In the future we hope to be: a train driver, a doctor, the manager at BigPond, a designer for famous superstars, a welder, a clothes designer, a part time professional footballer, and a car upholsterer. Our mentors would be: a good train driving teacher at TAFE, my dad’s teacher’s daughter (who is training to be a doctor), staff at BigPond, Jasmine’s aunty (who is a designer), my dad the welder, footballer Hazem El-Masri (”I know his brother”), and my stepdad the upholsterer.
Our other group imagined ourselves in the world of the future:
* “I plan to go to Italy to be a professional jewelery designer like my grandmother, Isabella.”
* “Driving a car – taught by my dad, Richard, the truck driver.”
* “A rugby league player like my cousin, Blake.”
* “Own a fast pink Lamborghini.”
* “Be a professional skateboarder. My mentor would be my uncle in New Zealand, Teuihi.”
* “Go to England to study at Cambridge University. My mum and dad would encourage me.”
* “A lawyer, like Matt, my mum’s lawyer.”
We hope for a world that has no judgment, low prices, no robbers and no police, no stop lights or pedestrians on the road, free skateboards for everyone, easy tests and exams, no street hobos, low-priced housing, more jobs, and no taxes.
Are these things possible to achieve? Maybe not, but some changes might be possible with: good government, underground tunnels to keep pedestrians away from cars (especially the drivers in fast pink Lamborghinis), more roundabouts, and more scholarships to university.
Best wishes from 6W English at Penrith PS

Good Day SCHC at Penrith PS!
Your group is good at so many things! I’m impressed that you know what you want to aim towards – whether it’s Supercar driving, becoming a soccer player or basketballer, an artist or rugby league player. I hope that they will still have Gladiators by the time you grow up! You are so right – it takes a lot of hard work and practice to reach our goals.
What a great bunch of mentors you have! Frank – it’s fantastic that you can get driving tips from your uncle. Chris – your parents sound like great soccer mentors. Jake – your basketball coach sounds excellent. Josiah – Scar sounds like a pretty amazing Gladiator! Mrs Coote – I’m with you – I really want to travel too and I admire those who do!
Love your work!

Good Day 6B English at Penrith PS!
I think it’s great that you split into 3 groups so you could explore a number of issues. The group that thought about your future family voted for different numbers of children – some wanted large families and some wanted one or two children. The group that talked about building a sense of family had really good ideas – it is so important to talk about problems and to encourage each other with positive talk!
Your group has so many strengths and skills ranging from maths to art to sport. All the best in your journey towards your future careers – artist, pilot, vet, rugby and soccer players, personal trainer and teacher – there is so much wonderful variety here!
You have some great mentors and fantastic ideas about the future for the 21st Century – thanks for a very thoughtful and considered response!

Good Day 5E at Penrith PS!
Thanks for sharing your hopes and dreams for future careers. It sounds as if you have some ace dancers in your group – into hip hop dancing, krump and belly dancing! This group seems strong in maths, art and sport also – with a cartoonist among you and two of you wanting to be artists! Wow – two of you want to be doctors and you have a chef, slash dancer, Newcombe ball player and rugby league player among your ranks!
Thanks for giving your reasons for following your dreams and the steps you will need to take. It sounds as if you had a great discussion about these issues. It is true that we follow our dreams for so many reasons – to prove something to ourselves and to other people! Your mentors sound truly inspiring – so many of them come from your families.
As one of you said, you will provide your own inspiration until the right coach comes along – well done!

Good Day 6W – love your work!
Your group has some fascinating interests and skills – including deep sea fishing and hip hop! Good on you for staying fit with the rugby league, netball and walking. You ahev a very wide range of jobs for the future and I can see that this is sometimes because the mentors in your lives have inspired you in these directions! If you plan to be a welder, designer, upholsterer or footballer, it really helps if you already know someone in the trade!
I loved your wishes for the 21st Century. It would be great world if we had no hobos on the street, no judgement from people, no crime and low priced housing. Sounds like a recipe for a peaceful and fair world!
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hi Rappers!
We have decided we want to be many different things when we grow up. We wanted to be, among other things: actors, cricketers, soccer stars, rugby league stars, Olympic athletes, fashion designers, politicians and many more.
We then read Daphne and Maureen’s stories in Strong Identity, proud future. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of being rich and famous and decided that if we weren’t going to be rich or famous, we’d like overall to be happy. To be happy, we decided that we’d like to have careers that involved: teaching, landscaping, firefighting, building, cooking and looking after children.
We hope many things for the world of the 21st century:
* Families should all have enough food to eat and a roof over their heads. – Charlotte
* A world where peace is restored. – Boston
* The world should care. – Lauren
* I support good friends. – Louise
* I believe in looking after the country. – Ross
* A world without crime. – Adam
* A world without smoking. – Jacob
* I hope the world will never fight again. – Maddi
* A world without global warming. – Paul
* A world without civil war. – Jake
Have a great week,

Good Day, Glenhaven 5/6 Rappers!
Wow – you have a great variety of jobs that you would like to do as adults! I can see a number of emerging sports people as well as people who are into politics, design and acting. I agree with you – if I can’t be rich and famous, I would definitely like to be happy. It is interesting that some of you want to help out in the community – teaching, cooking and looking after children are all jobs in the service sector. Builders and landscapers also contribute a great deal to shaping our communities.
Thanks to all of you for your great wishes for the 21st century! Charlotte – You want everyone’s basic needs to be met and no-one to go hungry. Boston, Lauren, Louise, Maddi and Jake – you wish for a world where relationships are strong, healthy and free of conflict. Ross, you care about the country and Paul, you care about the environment, while Jacob cares about people’s health. Adam, so many people would join with you in wishing for a world free of crime!
Thank you for your wishes and for the great discussion you have all had!

Je Glenhaven 5/6,
What a variety of careers! It will be interesting when you have a school reunion in later years to see if you all followed those paths, or you chose a different one.
I am very impressed with your hopes for the 21st Century. I sometimes wonder what the world will be like for my grandchildren and those generations who follow. I know now that with young people like you who care so much about the world and its people, that it will be a good place.
I know too that because many of you care for the environment, my great grandchildren will still have their traditional foods, medicines and sacred Country. They won’t just be stories told by the wise ones, or pictures in a book. To each one of you, I say thank you for that, because you are helping to keep my culture alive.
Deadly work Glenhaven 5/6!

Sarah – would like to join the Army, Air Force or Navy.
Andrew – wants to be a doctor.

Less drugs and alcohol.
An animal friendly place.

Hi from Wollumbin,
Miranda has joined Cory, Lillian and Sarah for this Rap Point 4.
Cory “I want a good life and I will be a responsible parent with a happy family. I’d like to be a chef or a mechanic, maybe to work in the mines. To get there I’ll work hard for HSC and try to get some tutoring or other support.”
Miranda “I will be a loving parent with a happy family of lots of children because I am an only child. I want to get into parliament or be an artist. I’d like to be the first Aboriginal Prime Minister! So I’ll have to work hard at school and finish Year 12.”
Sarah “I want a relaxed, calm and helpful family with one child, a girl. I want to be a responsible parent but not too over-protective. I’d like a well-paid job for two days a week and one day a week as a day-care teacher, so I’ll have to go to university or TAFE.”
Lillian “I’d like to have a caring and relaxed family, with one girl, and to be a responsible parent but not too strict. I’d like to be an Art teacher and also a Scout Leader after hours.”
And what they would like for the 21st Century includes:
• Less pollution, “greener” cars and solar houses
• Water conservation
• Friendlier communities
• No wars and more world peace
• No drugs and less alcohol
• Better health care
• Safety for all children
• National facilities for organ donors
• More relief for Third World countries
• Lower mortgages.
Woudn’t it be lovely?

Good Day 7R3 at Delroy! Love your work!
What a creative group you are – this certainly shows in the range of occupations you have listed and in your wishes for the 21st century! I notice that many of the jobs you have listed are helping professions – so I believe that you are also a kind and cooperative bunch as well!!
Your list of wishes has two main threads that I really liked. One is related to fairness and justice – no pollution, everything is free, no politics, no more weapons, no starvation or poverty. The other thread is one connected with new technologies – a trip to Mars, shoes that stay clean, hover vehicles and new types of weapons.
Thanks for all your ideas! Have a great break!

Good Day Crawford PS Rappers! Love your work!
I’m so glad that you had fun imagining your future families and choosing favourite names. I think the names you have chosen are great! I have met with some of my old school friends and it is surprising that many of them did end up having the sort of families they always wanted!
Andy – good luck with a future in football, Sarah I hope you gain entry into the armed forces. Andrew and May – all the best for your futures – you will need to keep working very hard at school to become a doctor or laywer!! Taniesha – both the jobs you want to do involve a good scientific knowledge. Jasmine – all the best with hairdressing and San Win, one day I might drive a car designed by you!
Your wishes for the 21st century are all about justice and peace and I love it that you believe that peace starts with you.

Good Day Miranda, Cory, Lillian and Sarah at Wollumbin!
It’s great to hear your hopes for the future. Cory – I like it that you have a few ideas for jobs and that you will get some tutoring support if you need it – that’s very wise and practical. Miranda – All the best with your political ambitions, it would be fantastic for Australia to have an Aboriginal PM. Lots of children would be great too! Sarah – Your plans are very balanced and calm with part time work, one child and a relaxed family. I wish we could all live in balance like this! Lillian, your plans are also very relaxed and the community would gain from your Scouts volunteering.
Your wishes for the 21st century are generous and outward looking. Your group obviously cares deeply about the environment and broader world issues.
Thanks you for your ideas.
